We treat a wide range of dental emergencies as part of our general dental services. Each condition requires specific care to address the underlying issue and prevent further complications. Here’s what to do for common dental emergencies and how we can help.

Avulsed Tooth (Tooth Knocked Out)

Call us FIRST at (317) 830-0073. Then follow these steps:
  1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part). DO NOT touch the root.
  2. Gently rinse the tooth with warm water to remove dirt. Do not scrub or dry it.
  3. If possible, try to place it back into its socket. Gently push it in with your fingers, or position it above the socket and close your mouth slowly.
  4. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, keep it moist. Place it in a cup of milk, or tuck it inside your cheek (if you are old enough to do so safely). Water is a last resort.
  5. Get to our office quickly and safely. The sooner you receive treatment, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
When you arrive, Dr. Hardin will attempt to reinsert the tooth and stabilize it. In some cases, root canal therapy may be necessary to save the tooth.

Lost Filling or Crown

A dental crown or filling can come loose while eating. Once it’s out, the affected tooth may be incredibly sensitive to temperature changes and pressure. Crowns generally become loose because the tooth beneath is decaying, which changes its shape. Here are the steps to take until you can reach us:
  1. Call our office to schedule an appointment.
  2. Keep the crown in a cool, safe place. We may be able to reattach it.
  3. Apply clove oil to the tooth to alleviate pain.
  4. If you have dental cement from a pharmacy, you can gently reattach the crown to the tooth. DO NOT use any kind of glue.
  5. If the crown is lost, smear the top of the tooth with dental cement to alleviate discomfort.
We will check the crown to see if it still fits. If it does, we will reattach it. If decay is present, we will treat it and make a new crown.

Cracked or Broken Teeth

Fractures, cracks, and breaks are generally caused by trauma, grinding, or biting hard objects. If a crack extends down into the root, the pain will likely be extreme. If a segment of tooth has broken off, here is what you can do at home:
  1. Call our office to schedule an appointment.
  2. Rinse the tooth fragment and your mouth with lukewarm water.
  3. Apply gauze to the area for ten minutes if there is bleeding.
  4. Place a cold, damp dish towel on your cheek to minimize swelling and pain.
  5. Cover the affected area with over-the-counter dental cement if you cannot see us immediately.
  6. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever to manage discomfort.
The nature of the break will determine our approach. If a fracture or crack extends into the root, root canal therapy is often the most effective way to retain the tooth. In the case of a complete break, we may temporarily reattach the fragment to the tooth.

Dislodged/Loose Teeth

When a tooth has been dislodged or loosened from its socket by trauma or decay, it might be possible to save it. If the tooth remains in the mouth, still attached to the blood vessels and nerves, there is a good chance root canal therapy will not be necessary.
  1. Call our office immediately to make an appointment.
  2. Use a cold compress and over-the-counter medications to relieve pain.
Dr. Hardin will reposition the tooth and add splints to stabilize it. If the tooth fails to heal, root canal therapy might be required.
