If it’s been a while since your last dental visit, you might feel a little nervous about what to expect. Maybe you’re worried we’ll find something wrong. Maybe you’re not sure what actually happens during a checkup. Or maybe you just don’t like surprises.
We get it. So let’s take the mystery out. Here’s a step‑by‑step look at what happens during a routine dental exam and cleaning at our Indianapolis, IN, dental office.
Step One: We Talk First
Before we look at anything, we want to hear from you. We’ll ask how your teeth have been feeling, whether you’ve noticed any sensitivity, bleeding, or pain, and if anything has changed since your last visit.
We’ll also review your medical history. This matters more than most people realize. New medications, recent surgeries, and conditions like diabetes or pregnancy can all affect your oral health. Knowing the full picture helps us care for you properly.
If you have dental anxiety, tell us. We offer sedation options, and we’ll walk you through everything beforehand and check in with you along the way.
Step Two: Digital X‑Rays
Depending on how long it’s been since your last visit, we may take digital X‑rays. These images show us what’s happening below the surface, between your teeth, under your gums, and in your jawbone.
Digital X‑rays are quick and comfortable. They use far less radiation than the old film X‑rays, and the images appear on screen almost instantly. We can show you what we’re seeing and explain anything that looks unusual.
Step Three: The Exam
Once we have a clear picture, we examine your teeth and gums. We check for signs of decay, worn fillings, chipped teeth, and gum inflammation. We also perform an oral cancer screening, looking at your tongue, cheeks, throat, and the floor of your mouth for anything unusual.
This exam isn’t about catching you doing something wrong. It’s about spotting small issues before they become big ones. Most of what we find is minor and easy to address.
Step Four: The Cleaning
This is the part most people think of when they hear “dental visit.” Our hygienist uses specialized tools to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and along the gumline. Plaque is the soft, sticky film that forms daily. Tartar is hardened plaque and can only be removed with professional tools.
You’ll hear some scraping and feel some pressure, but it shouldn’t hurt. If you’re sensitive, let us know, and we’ll adjust our approach. We may also use a polishing tool to smooth your teeth and remove surface stains.
Step Five: Talking Through the Plan
After the cleaning, we sit down with you and go over what we found. If everything looks good, great. We’ll talk about home care and see you at your next visit.
If we spotted something that needs attention, such as a small cavity, a worn filling, or some gum inflammation, we’ll explain it clearly and show you the X‑rays or photos so you can see what we see. Then we’ll talk through your options.
You won’t leave with a surprise treatment plan you don’t understand. We make sure you know what’s happening, why it matters, and what it will involve.
Step Six: Scheduling Your Next Visit
Most patients benefit from a cleaning and exam every six months. Some need more frequent visits, depending on their gum health or risk factors. We’ll recommend a schedule that fits your needs.
If you have dental anxiety, we also offer oral sedation to help you get through the appointment comfortably. Just ask.
